Noble

The umbrella has not always been an ordinary object.

Across different cultures and periods of history, forms of parasols and umbrellas could be associated with people of importance, ceremony and social distinction. To carry, hold or be sheltered beneath one could communicate something about position and status.

From ancient civilisations through to royal courts and European society, protection from the elements could become intertwined with ideas of power, privilege and presentation.

The object itself could be carefully made, richly decorated or carried as part of a formal occasion. In these settings, the umbrella was no longer simply practical. It had become part of the language of status.

The Noble collection explores the umbrella as a symbol of rank, ceremony and distinction — and the changing societies in which those meanings developed.

We are researching the people, cultures, objects and traditions behind this story, with more to come.

The Noble collection is currently being developed.
